Cystic lesions of breast tissue are frequently diagnosed among fertile age women. Incidence of this disorder is up to 30% out of all benign disorders of the breast. Although the benign status, some of breast cysts have a proliferative potential resulting in cysts enlargement, focal pain and local discomfort. The most common cause of this condition is disturbances of sex-steroid hormone production such as estrogen. Therefore using of anti-estrogen drugs might be a useful tool in management of the breast cysts. However, little is known about the effect of estrogen-receptor blockers in treatment of women with cystic lesions of the breast.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of estrogen-receptor blocker toremifene on breast cysts of fertile age women.

Material and methods

We identified 94 female patients of fertile age (mean 34.5, range 29-50) with diagnosis of benign breast cysts. Two groups were established according to treatment. One group (n=46) received toremifene 20 mg/day (T) between 5th and 25th day of menstrual cycle, whereas the second group (n=48) underwent phytotherapy (P). After 3 months of treatment patients underwent interview, physical examination; the size and amount of cystic lesions were evaluated by mammography and sonography and then compared between the groups.

Results

The reduction of cystic size was 2 times higher in group T (73%, 34/46), as compared to group P (35%, 17/48), p=0.001. The number of eliminated small (≤ 7 mm) cystic lesions was also 2 times higher in group T (36%, 16/46) compared to group P (16%, 7/48), p=0.031. Our results suggest that toremifene is effective drug for treatment of breast cysts. However, further observations are needed to determine the long-time effect and justify the patinets’ outcome.

Decreasing of local symptoms was similar in both groups: T (89%, 41/46) and P (69%, 42/48).

Conclusions

Our results suggest that toremifene is effective drug for treatment of breast cysts. However, further observations are needed to determine its long-term effect
